Faith vs Trust
Despite of the difference between faith and trust, the two words, trust and faith, are often used interchangeably. So, you can say that trust and faith are two words that are often confused when it comes to understanding their meanings and connotations. Faith is used in the sense of ‘belief’ or ‘devotion’. On the other hand, the word trust is used in the sense of ‘confidence’ and ‘reliance’. This is the main difference between the two words. Various words have arisen from the two words, namely, faith and trust. Both of the words, trust and faith are used primarily as nouns.
What does Faith mean?
Faith is used in the sense of ‘belief’ or ‘devotion’. Observe the two sentences given below.
I have faith in you.
She lost faith in God.
In both the sentences, you can see that the word faith is used in the sense of ‘belief’ or ‘devotion.’ Hence, the meaning of the first sentence would be ‘I have belief in you’, and the meaning of the second sentence would be ‘she lost belief in God’.
Words like faithfully, faithless, in faith, faithfulness and the like have been formed from thenounform of faith. It is interesting to note that the adjectival form of faith is ‘faithful’ as in the expressions ‘faithful husband’ and ‘faithful employee’.
What does Trust mean?
The word trust is used in the sense of ‘confidence’ and ‘reliance’. Observe the two sentences given below.
He trusted his friend blindly.
She had reposed a lot of trust in him.
In both the sentences, you can find that the word trust is used in the sense of ‘reliance’ or ‘confidence.’ Hence, the meaning of the first sentence would be ‘he relied on his friend blindly’, and the meaning of the second sentence would be ‘she had reposed a lot of confidence on him’.
It is interesting to note that the wordtrustis sometimes used in the sense of an ‘organization’ that is formed to undertake a work. Look at the sentences given below.
The members of the trust agreed unanimously.
They formed a trust.
In both the sentences, the word trust is used in the sense of an organization or an association that is formed to undertake a work.
Just like the word faith, a few words can be formed from the noun form of trust as well. Words like ‘trustworthy’, ‘trustee’, ‘trusty’ and the like are formed from the noun form of ‘trust’. It is interesting to note that the word trust has its adjectival form in the word ‘trustworthy’.
