Black Friday vs Cyber Monday

Consumers in large numbers come to malls and retail chain stores to buy content of their heart in sales organized during Christmas and New Year. This, however, seems to be not enough for the shopkeepers and big malls who have been using ingenious ways to increase their sales by luring more people to shopping malls than would come on their own. The two days, just after the Thanksgiving Day, have become notorious for providing amazingly high discounts and promotional offers, which draw a horde of people to these sales. These sales are known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday respectively. Common people treat these two days on par as just two big sale days. However, there are subtle differences that shall be highlighted in this article.

What is Black Friday?

In US and Canada, and now in UK, Italy, Germany, France, and some more western countries, the day after Thanksgiving Day has been chosen by retailers and mall owners as the day to lure consumers. It is treated as the start of the festival season and celebrated as a big sale where consumers are provided huge discounts on electronic and household items. This is called the Black Friday, and people wait a whole year to make purchases of their desired gadgets and other appliances, as they know they will benefit by getting offers that are not available all year long.

What is Cyber Monday?

The concept of organizing another big sale after Thanksgiving Day to lure consumers to purchase household items in the comfort of their own homes is what led to Cyber Monday coming into existence, in 2005. This is an online sale day when people can enjoy the lowest prices of the year on products. This is a clever ploy to make all those who missed out on discounts on Black Friday to come online and make big purchases through the net. Since its launch in 2005, Cyber Monday has been a raging success and today it has become the single largest sale day in online transactions with a sale of more than $1000 million.

What is the difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

• While Black Friday is organized the next day of Thanksgiving Day, Cyber Monday is the Monday falling after Black Friday making a gap of just 3 days between the 2 biggest sale days signaling the start of the holiday season

• Black Friday is a physical sale. Cyber Monday is an online sale organized by retailers, to give another opportunity to those who could not make it to Black Friday sale because of some reason.

• Cybermonday.com is the exclusive website that has been organizing Cyber Monday.

• Though it is believed that mostly consumers who miss out on Black Friday take part in Cyber Monday, the fact is that many who make merry in Black Friday make it a point not to miss out on big deals on Cyber Monday also.

• Big retail chains like Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy take part in Black Friday while smaller retailer push their deals to Cyber Monday thinking it is difficult for them to compete with big boys.
