Teachers and Masters are two terms that exhibit lot of differences between them when it comes to their roles and nature. A teacher is the one who teaches a subject to you. On the other hand a master is the one who is a specialist in a subject.

One of the main differences between teachers and masters is that masters need not teach. They are simply experts in the subjects such as arts, fine arts including music and dance, sports and the like.

A good teacher has to be a master in his or her subject. A master on the other hand need not necessarily be a teacher. In fact he is consulted by many with the hope that their doubts will be dispelled by him.

Experts in the field of music are also termed sometimes as masters. We have terms such as ‘little master’ and ‘grand master’ in games such as cricket and chess. A master should certainly possess expertise in a branch of knowledge. A teacher on the other hand has the special duty of teaching the students what he knows and what he has learned.

A teacher imparts knowledge whereas a master need not impart knowledge but exhibits his knowledge through his writings and speeches and of course performances. A great musician for example exhibits his expertise in the field of music by sheer performance and he is called a master. In the same way a sportsperson exhibits his skill on the field and by virtue of his exemplary performances he is called a master.

A teacher need not be a good performer especially in the field of music and arts. On the other hand a master necessarily has to be a good performer in any field for that matter. This is the reason why in fields like music and dance we often find teachers who are not performers and performers who do not teach.
