Anabolic vs Androgenic
All anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone and have unique molecular structures which are similar to testosterone. Anabolic steroids are basically used to enhance the anabolic functions of testosterone while depressing the androgenic effects of it. However, none of these steroids can completely eliminate the androgenic effect; thus, they retain some androgenic potential. Because of that, anabolic steroids are often referred to as anabolic-androgenic steroids. The concept called ‘selective receptor binding’ is used to determine the anabolic-to-androgenic ratio of a particular steroid. Testosterone is the most potent hormone which produces naturally by the glands in the human body. It exists in both sexes and has many anabolic and androgenic influences.
Anabolic
Anabolic effect of steroid hormones stimulates the growth of many tissues, especially bone and muscle. Other anabolic functions are increasing muscle mass, bone density, hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell mass, nitrogen retention and protein synthesis, visceral organ size, retention of several electrolytes, height during puberty, and enhancing of the immune system.
Androgenic
Stimulate the development and maintenance of the male characteristic in vertebrates by steroid hormone is called androgenic effect. In human, testosterone is the responsible hormone for this. Most synthesized steroid hormones are used to suppress the androgenic activity of testosterone while increasing its anabolic effects. The androgenic functions include stimulate initial growth of the penis (in males) and clitoris (in females), growth and development of seminal vesicles and prostrate glands, increase density of hair, deepening the voice, increase the oil production of sebaceous glands and stimulate certain male personality characteristics.
What is the difference between Anabolic and Androgenic?
• Synthesized anabolic steroids increase the anabolic effects of testosterone while reducing its androgenic effects.
• Androgenic effect increases the growth of penis, seminal vesicles, prostrate glands, pubic hair, facial hair, whereas anabolic effect increases mass of skeletal muscles, bone density, hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell mass, nitrogen retention and protein synthesis, visceral organ size, and height during puberty.
