What is Candida Albicans?
Candida albicansis an opportunistic commensal pathogen. It is the pathogenic yeast commonly found in the human gut. It can also survive outside the human body.白念珠菌is present in the gastrointestinal tract and mouth in many healthy individuals. Thus, this fungus usually becomes pathogenic in immunocompromised people under a variety of conditions.白念珠菌is the most commonCandidaspecies that causes candidiasis. It has been reported that systemic candidiasis due to白念珠菌causes a mortality rate of 40%. Moreover, this fungus is also responsible for invasive candidiasis. Some new studies indicate that白念珠菌can also cross the blood-brain barrier.
白念珠菌is normally used as a model organism for fungal pathogens. It undergoes morphological switching between yeast and hyphal forms (filamentous cells). Therefore, it is called a dimorphic fungus.白念珠菌exists as haploid, diploid or tetraploid. The diploid genome size is around 29 Mb. Approximately 70 % of the protein-coding genes ofCandida albicanshave not yet been characterized.白念珠菌causes both superficial local infections (mouth, vagina) and systematic infections (immunocompromised people). It also plays a role in Crohn’s disease. It is identified that people suffering from Crohn’s disease are more likely to be colonized by白念珠菌.
