Nintendo is one of the major players in the world when it comes to making gaming devices. Its consoles have been sold in millions around the world and loved by gamers for excellent graphics and superb sound. Wii is Nintendo’s 7th generation console released in 2006 and received stupendous success wherever it was released. There had been talks of a successor to Wii for the last one year which has culminated in the release of Wii U which is an ultimate gaming device. Let us make a quick comparison between Wii and Wii U to find out differences if any and also to enable new buyers to make a correct choice.

Wii U

Wii U is the successor to hugely popular Wii that has been recently unveiled by Nintendo and is packed with some new features while retaining all the good features of Wii. This gaming console has a brand new controller that keeps the game going even when TV is switched off. Good thing about Wii U is that it is backward compatible with all previous consoles and this is one feature that will be lapped up by gamers using Nintendo consoles.

Wii U controller measures just 1.8×6.8×10.5 inches and the screen size is 6.2 inches. The controller has traditional buttons over it apart from those on the remote control. This controller looks just like a tablet with a high resolution touch screen and the user is free to run the games on his TV as well. Playing on this touch pad is a wonderful experience which is a bonus as one can play like his old Wii using remote controls on his TV. The controller has built in accelerometer, gyro sensor, microphone and a front facing camera.

Wii U console has a dimension of 1.8×6.8×10.5 inches and has a much faster IBM powered multi core processor and a custom designed AMD Redon HD GPU for faster graphics processing. You can connect up to four Wii remote controllers and the console supports all the previous input devices, so that you can use the controllers you had with previous Wii. The Console also has HDMI out that supports up to 1080p and 1080i.

Wii created a lot of buzz in the market and gamers loved the unique idea of wireless remote controls when it was first released in 2006. In a short time period, Wii had sales more than Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PSP around the world. Another feature, called WiiConnect 24, created stir as it enabled the console to receive messages and updates from the web automatically.

One great feature of Wii is that it is backward compatible so that it allows gamers to play all games of earlier consoles such as GameCube and even older. Before its official launch, company had codenamed it revolution but finally decided on Wii as it resembled the English word We making gamers feel as if Wii was indeed meant for everyone.

Wii measures 44x157x215.4mm and weighs 1.2 kg making it easily portable. It is possible to make it stand horizontally or vertically. The major attraction of Wii is its remote controllers that make use of inbuilt accelerometers. These controllers allow gamers to control characters in the game using gestures and physical buttons on the remotes.

Wii provides 512 MB of flash memory and allows for more memory using micro SD cards. One can save unfinished games or download games in these micro SD cards. Wii is nearly twice as fast as its predecessor, packed with a fast 729 MHz processor.

    Do Wii U games work on the normal Wii consoles?

      No, but you can play your old wii games on the new console and use the old remotes with it, also.
