Tour vs Trip
Tour and Trip are two words that are often confused due the similarity in their meanings. There is of course some difference between the two words. There is tour conducted by a travel agency with the intention of showing places of interests to the travelers. Hence it is conducted with the motive of sight-seeing.
On the other hand a trip refers to a piece of travel as in the sentence ‘I hope you had a nice trip’. In this sentence the word ‘trip’ indicates the movement of the person or the traveler from one place to another. It also implies the visit made by the person. Hence the purpose of the word ‘trip’ includes both visit and movement.
A tour is always taken with a view to enjoy and relax. The same is not true in the case of a trip. In other words it can be said that a trip is made not with the intention of enjoyment or relaxation always. Sometimes you take a trip to a place to inquire about the health of your dear and near.
Tours are of several kinds. There are educational tours, sports tours, relaxation tours, camping tours and the like. Hence the purposes of the tours differ. A cricket tour is a tour taken by the players of the game of cricket to another nation with a view to play test matches with the other nation and some county games as well. Within the tour the players make a few trips to the nearby places to relax. Hence a trip can be a subset of a tour.
A trip is usually a short one in terms of the period of travel. On the other hand most tours are long in terms of the time spent in travel. This is an important difference between a tour and a trip.
