Offer vs Invitation
Offer and Invitation are two words that are often confused due to the appearing similarity in their meanings and connotations. Strictly speaking, there is some difference between the two words.
The word ‘offer’ is used in the sense of ‘present’. On the other hand, the word ‘invitation’ is used in the sense of ‘call’. This is the main difference between the two words, namely, offer and invitation. There is of course some difference between the meanings of call and present.
Take a look at the following sentences
1. Francis accepted the offer made by the shopkeeper.
2. Angela is looking for a good offer.
In both the sentences, the word ‘offer’ is used in the sense of ‘present’. Sometimes the word ‘offer’ is used in the sense of ‘bid’ too.
It is interesting to note that the word ‘offer’ is used as a noun. The abstract noun of ‘offer’ is ‘offering’. On the other hand, the word ‘invitation’ is used as a noun. Its verbal form is ‘invite’. It has its adjectival form in the word ‘inviting’. Take a look at these sentences,
1. Lucy accepted the invitation of her friend.
2. Robert extends his invitation to his neighbor.
In both the sentences, the word ‘invitation’ is used in the sense of ‘call’. These are the very important differences between the two words, namely, offer and invitation.
