Lizard vs Salamander

A lizard and salamander have a primal tetrapod body (these are vertebrae animals that have 4 limbs). They have slender bodies and long tails. Like other lizards, lots of salamanders have absent or reduced limbs, which give them an eel-like appearance.

Lizard

Majority of lizards rely on sight, especially in locating their prey and communication. Most of them have extremely acute color vision. Some of them depend on body language, by using specific gestures, movement and postures in defining one’s territory, resolving any disputes and enticing mates. Some lizards use bright colors, which are hidden or in between the scales and these are only revealed when needed.

Salamander

Salamander is the second largest among amphibians. In finding their prey, they use trichromatic color vision. Subterranean types of salamanders have reduced eyes, and most of the time they are covered by layers of skin. Its larvae and some adults have a lateral line organ. Same as the fish, they can detect any changes in water pressure. Furthermore, they don’t have external ears. They only have vestigial middle ears.

When it comes to looks, salamanders are amphibious and have damp skin and do not have scales. Furthermore, they don’t have any ear openings or claws. As for lizards, they are terrestrial and have rough skin and have scales. They have ear openings and claws. When giving birth, these two lay eggs. However, a lizard’s egg has a hard shell while a salamander’s egg does not have one. Once hatched, the baby lizard looks like the smaller size of the adult lizard.
