As their names indicate, affirmative sentences convey a positive meaning whereas negative sentences convey a negative meaning.

What is an Assertive Sentence?

Assertive sentences or declarative sentences are the most common type of sentences we use in our day to day life. Accordingly, these sentences state facts. For example,

Peter is a student.

Peter doesn’t like to wake up early in the morning.

As seen above, assertive sentences state, assert or declare sometime. These sentences include simple, complex or compound sentences. Let’s now look at some more examples:

What is an Affirmative Sentence?

An affirmative sentence is a sentence that affirms, rather than negates, a proposition. In other words, any sentence or declaration that is positive is an affirmative statement. Thus, affirmative sentences are the opposite of negative sentences.

Affirmative sentences tell us what something or something has, does, or is whereas negative sentences do the opposite, i.e., indicating that something or something doesn’t have, can’t do, or isn’t. For example,

Rose danced with Jack. (indicates what someone does)

Mrs.Peterson is a chemistry teacher. (indicates what someone is)

Brittany has a poodle.(indicates what someone has)
