When it comes to measuring lands, many people use many measuring methods all over the world. While some may prefer one unit of area over the other, others may use certain units of measurement for the convenience of keeping track. However, it is quite easy to get confused between units of measurement. Acre and hectare are two such units of area that are often confused between one another.

What is an Acre?

An acre is a unit of measurement mostly used in U.S customary and imperial systems. An acre is 43,560 square feet and approximately 4,047 m2 and is about 75% of an American football field. Internationally, the acre is defined as 1/640 of a square mile and is represented with the symbol ac. Acre is commonly used in United States, American Samoa, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia, The Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, Belize, the Cayman Islands, the Falkland Islands, Dominica, Grenada, the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, India, Montserrat, Jamaica, Myanmar, Samoa, Pakistan, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Helena, Turks and Caicos and the US Virgin Islands. Although, by legislation, the metric system is in use, acre is commonly used in the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, as well. Today, the international acre, which is exactly 4046.8564224 square metres, is the most commonly used acre. The most common use of the acre today is to measure tracts of land.

What is a Hectare?

A hectare is defined as a metric unit of area primarily used for the measurement of land that is comprised of 10,000 square metres. The hectare, though it is a non-SI unit, is accepted for use with the SI units. It is the legal unit of measure when it comes to law and deeds, land ownership, planning, agriculture, forestry, town planning and etc throughout the European Union. Some of the legacy units that are considered to be equal to a hectare are Jerib in Iran, Djerib in Turkey, Gong Qing in mainland China, Manzana in Argentina, and Bunder in The Netherlands until 1939.

• An acre is a unit of measurement mostly used in U.S customary and imperial systems. Hectare is a metric unit of area.

• Hectare is the legal unit of measure throughout the European Union. Acre is commonly used in countries such United States, American Samoa, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Lucia, The Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, Belize, the Cayman Islands, the Falkland Islands, Dominica, Grenada, the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, India, Montserrat, Jamaica, Myanmar, Samoa, Pakistan and etc.
