Periodontitis is a gum disease that results in the inflammation of the periodontium due to bacteria. Periodontium is the tissue that supports the teeth. The symptoms of periodontitis may include swollen gums, bright red or purple gums, tender gums when touched, bleeding gums, spitting out blood, bad breath, pus between teeth and gums, loose teeth, painful chewing, new spaces developing between teeth, gums that pull away from the teeth, and a change in the way the teeth fit together while biting.
