Differences Between Lyrical vs Contemporary

Difference between lyrical and contemporary is quite easy to understand as their meanings are not even close. Therefore, lyrical and contemporary are two different words that have to be used with difference. They should not be interchanged due to the clear difference in their meanings. The word lyrical is used in the sense of ‘poetical’ or ‘romantic’. On the other hand, the word contemporary is used in the sense of ‘modern’ or ‘present day’. This is the main difference between the two words. Both lyrical and contemporary are word used asadjectivesin the English language.

What does Lyrical mean?

The word lyrical is used in the sense of poetical or romantic. It is interesting to note that the word lyrical is used as an adjective as in the expression ‘a lyrical composition of Shakespeare’. Take a look at the following sentences.

A lyrical composition of Shakespeare was read out in the hall.

The poetry of Angela looked lyrical.

In the first sentence, the word lyrical is used in the sense of ‘poetical’. On the other hand, the word lyrical is used in the sense of ‘romantic’, in the second sentence. The word lyrical is said to have formed from the word ‘lyric’.

Differences Between Lyrical and Contemporary

Moreover, the word lyrical is used in phrases such as ‘wax lyrical’ in the English language. According to the Oxford English dictionary, wax lyrical means ‘talk in a highly enthusiastic and effusive way.’ For example,

She waxed lyrical about her new book.

This sentence means ‘she talked in a highly enthusiastic and effusive way about her new book.’

What does Contemporary mean?

On the other hand, the word contemporary is used in the sense of modern or present day. The word contemporary is used as an adjective too as in the expression ‘contemporary art’. The word contemporary in this expression is used in the sense of ‘modern’ or ‘present day art’. This is an important observation to make when it comes to the usage of the word contemporary. To further understand the use of the word contemporary, observe the two sentences given below.

An exhibition on contemporary art was held in Paris recently.

Contemporary poetry is hard to understand.

In both the sentences, the word contemporary is used in the sense of ‘present day.’ Hence, the meaning of the first sentence would be ‘an exhibition on present day art was held in Paris recently’, and the meaning of the second sentence would be ‘modern poetry is hard to understand’.
