Difference Between Taffeta and Satin

Taffeta vs Satin

Satin is a luxurious fabric quite well known as being gracious and heavenly and used for making special occasion dresses for mostly ladies and small girls though men also make use the material for their special occasion shirts and trousers made of satin. Satin is very soft, almost like silk and has a sheen that is no parallel. There is another fabric similar in looks and feel that has created a lot of confusion among those who do not know much about fabrics and that is taffeta. This article attempts to highlight the differences between taffeta and satin, especially to remove doubts from the minds of the to be brides looking for a suitable fabric for their wedding gowns.

Taffeta

Customers picking up wedding dresses in a store get confused when what they believe to be satin turns out to be an altogether different fabric called taffeta. Taffeta is an ancient, woven fabric that was earlier made from silk but is today made from other synthetic fibers, as well. The name of the fabric is derived from Persian language and literally means something that is twisted and woven. It is a luxurious fabric that is considered to be of very high quality and remains in demand just as silk. The fabric can be plain or woven thereby giving different feel as far as texture is concerned. Taffeta that is used in linings of dresses is soft and is piece dyed. On the other hand, taffeta that is yarn dyed is harder and used to make evening dresses. It is not that taffeta is only used to make apparels as one can see the fabric being used in ribbons, umbrellas and even for insulation in electrical circuits.

Satin

Satin is a fabric that is almost like silk and, in fact, it was first made with silk in China. The fabric is very glossy from one side and not so glossy from the other side which is kept in mind while making apparels from the fabric. Because of their softness and luxurious feel, satin has always been a preferred fabric of the royalties. Satin fabric is known for its shine, which is a result of its special process of weaving. Satin weave is one of the three main weaving processes to make fabrics. There are also double faced satin fabrics that are obviously more expensive and they are shiny from both sides.

What is the difference between Taffeta and Satin?

• Though they look similar, there is a difference in the feel of the two fabrics as satin feels a lot smoother while taffeta has a texture that can be noticed from close.

• Taffeta holds its shape more than satin while satin is easier to drape around the body

• As taffeta is crisper of the two fabrics, it is used more in drapery while satin being softer is used to make women’s formal dresses
