Rat vs Possum
Rats and possums belong to two completely different groups of mammals, and it would never be complicated to understand who is who. Their natural distribution range, morphological features, colourations, and most of other biological aspects are different between these two, and it would be important to discuss the particulars as in this article.
Rat

People assume that Possum are rats because morphologically they look very similar. However, this is ignorance on parade. As you stated Possum are marsupials.
I had a possum for a pet for about 7 years before he died. He was orphaned when his mother was hit by a car and I fed him liquid Esbilac through a 5 cc syringe until he could eat solid food. I had 2 cats and they accepted him as their own and the three used to sleep together and play all the time. He was litter box trained just like the cats.
