Difference between program and programme is very easy to understand though program and programme have become two words that give rise to confusion when it comes to usage. People are often confused as to which form to use. It is important to know that the difference occurs only in the region where the two words are used. The word program is theAmericanway of using the word programme of the British. This is the difference between the two words program and programme. Have you seen how the word programme becomes underlined when you are sometimes using software? That is simply because in the world of computing program is the accepted term nowadays.

What does Program mean? What does Programme mean?

有趣的是,英国使用spelling programme to mean the program of the American. On the other hand, the British are careful to use the spelling program when they refer to computers. In other words, the British do not use the spelling programme for referring to computers. This is the basic difference between the usage of the two words, namely, program and programme.

Australian English recommends the usage of the spelling program for official purposes. It is interesting to note that the spelling programme is still in vogue in the continent of Australia. The people of Australia still use the word programme. In other words, it can be said that the Australians use both the words.

Difference Between Program and Programme

The Americans, on the other hand, certainly use the word program only. They never use the word programme for any purpose. In fact, they consider the very spelling of the word programme wrong. This is the major difference between the two words, namely, program and programme.
As a matter of fact, the word program was more prevalent in the United Kingdom in the 19th century until the word programme became more and more popular later. Hence, both the words are accepted in the United Kingdom at the moment. The pronunciation of both the words, namely, program and programme is in fact the same. The verbal form ‘programming’ is of course accepted in the same sense in both the countries.

The tip to using the correct form of the word is simple. Just remember to use program for anything relating to computers. Anyway, the American English users have nothing to worry about as they can use program for every use. However, British English users have to be more careful.

• On the other hand, the British are careful to use the spelling program when they refer to computers.
