This makes the crossing intelligent as it can increase or reduce the time for which traffic light remains red. This helps pedestrians as they are not required to walk faster and the crossing detects their body heat to keep the signal red.

What is the difference between Pelican Crossing and Puffin Crossing? • Puffin crossing makes use of advanced infra red cameras to detect the presence of pedestrians through their body heat. This is advancement over pelican crossing that do not have this facility. • While the green man in pelican crossing remains on the other side of the road for the pedestrians, he is on the side of the pedestrians in case of puffin crossing.
