Male vs Female Robins
Birds provide a great platform to discuss the differences between males and females, as almost all the males are colourful and attractive, while the females are the other way around. Robins have not been an exception into that rule. It is hard to discuss what colours do male have, and variations in colourations compared to females, as those vary vastly across species. They have a worldwide distribution, but certain species are common to certain places of the world; North American robins, European robins, Australian robins, Japanese robins, and Indian robins are some of them. However, this article aims to discuss the differences between male and female of one species to cover them all. American robins exhibit some significant differences between their two sexes, and those are worth discussing as in this article.

The American robins are migratory song birds belong to the thrush family, Turdidae. They have a reddish orange chest with white streaks. Sometimes the male breast area has considerable dark spots. The reddish orange colour is very bright and contrasting. Their head is almost black and the eye crescent is white. Their upper or dorsal feathers are greyish and the belly and under tail are white. The beak is yellow and the males have small dark spot at the tip. They are active in the daytime and males have a very sharp and complex voice, making them quite popular for their singing. An adult male is about 28 centimetres long and weighs around 80 grams. They mate between late spring and midsummer and the male does not contribute for the building of the nest. However, males take the responsibility to protect the nest from predators by aggressive whistles, which are very sharp and explosive seeech-each-each-each calls to threaten the enemies.
Female Robin
Female robins are small with a body length of about 23 centimetres and their body weight is about 70 grams. As in many birds, female robins are less attractive and the colours are less bright. They have a brown tint on the head, brown upper parts and less bright under parts. The tip of female’s beak has a visible black spot. Female works hard in building the nest for breeding and does not receive any help from others. Each year, a new nest is built for the breeding purposes. She lays three to five light blue colour eggs, and incubates them all alone for 14 days. However, the female’s contribution is more in feeding the chicks as well.
What is the difference between Male and Female Robin? • Male colours are much brighter and contrasting than female colours. In fact, females are usually dull looking. • Female works harder to prepare the nest and receives no help from male. • Incubation of eggs is a whole responsibility of the female, while males keep watching the nest and protecting. • Males are more aggressive than females. • Male has a beautiful voice, which is popular even among people and known as a songbird. However, female makes chirping sounds, but it is not as attractive as male’s songs. • Chicks in the nest try to imitate father’s voice rather than mother’s. |
