LCD vs LED

LED and LCD are two technologies that are widely used in various fields. LED means Light Emitting Diode, which is a single component electronic device. LCD means Liquid Crystal Display, which is a multi component display device. Both of these devices are used in similar and different applications such as television, instrument displays, indicators, and various others. It is very important to have a proper understanding in the concepts and operation of LCDs and LEDs in order to have a proper understanding of these fields. In this article, we are going to discuss what LED and LCD are, their properties, applications of LCDs and LEDs, their operation, similarities between LCD and LED, and finally the difference between LED and LCD.

LED

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. LED is a semiconductor diode. A semiconductor diode consists of a p – type and a n – type semiconductor, which is a pure semiconductor doped with different amounts of different impurities. These two are connected together. In the connected region, the excess negative charges (electrons) in the n side are combined with the excess positive charges (holes) of the p side. This creates a neutral region with a small width around the junction. This region is known as the depletion region or depletion layer. When a voltage strong enough to overcome the potential barrier of the depletion region is applied across the junction the holes and electrons recombine releasing energy. The amount of energy is determined by the energy gap of the p type and the n type. For the emission of energy, the pure semiconductors at the p side and the n side must be different in energy. LEDs are widely used in TVs now, as they consume low power and can give high brightness and contrast.

LCD

液晶代表液晶显示器。液晶显示器了as a replacement technology for large and heavy cathode ray tubes. Now most of the small devices and TVs have LCD technology. LCDs are built based on the light modulating properties of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals cannot emit light by themselves. The LCDs manipulate the light from the backlight to produce the desired image. LCDs can be either monochromatic or color. LCDs consume less power than the CRT displays; therefore, they are good for portable devices. Small panel LCDs are available readily to use as instrument displays and replacement for seven segment displays.

What is the difference between LCD and LED?

• LCD is a device, which consists of several parts whereas an LED is a single component device.

• LCD is only used as a display device, whereas LEDs are used in various other applications such as flashlights and indicators. LEDs are capable of producing light whereas liquid crystals cannot produce light. LED displays consume less power in general than the same sized LCDs.

• LCD is only used as a display device, whereas LEDs are used in various other applications such as flashlights and indicators.

•led能够产生光whereas liquid crystals cannot produce light.

• LED displays consume less power in general than the same sized LCDs.

• In recently produced displays, LEDs are used as the backlight to LCDs.

• LED displays can produce more brightness and contrast then the counterpart LC displays.
