Katana vs Samurai

Katana is a word that is always used in connection with Samurais, the warrior class of Japan that was found in medieval Japan. Katana was the name of the sword used by samurais, but the fact that katana swords are also referred to as samurai swords confuses people as they cannot understand the difference between Katana and samurai. This article attempts to remove all confusion from the minds of the readers by highlighting the differences between katana and samurai swords.

Katana

Katana is one of the several swords used by the samurais in medieval Japan. However, the name became associated with the warrior class as it was considered the most important sword used by the samurais. In fact, samurais wore this sword as a way to show their place in the feudal society. These swords were extremely thin and had very sharp edge making them the deadly weapon of the samurais. The sword was very flexible and strong and always was made of steel and iron. The sword was razor sharp and could cut a man into two. Katana was always long and curved and had a long grip.

Samurai

The name samurai evokes sentiments of respect and awe among the people of Japan. Samurai was a name given to the warrior class in pre-industrial Japan, but the same samurais later rose to become a ruling military class. In the Edo Period of Japan, samurais were very respectable. They made use of many different weapons, but the main weapon used to be their sword. The most important sword samurais used was katana which they carried inside a scabbard and tucked to their bodies with the help of a belt.

Katana vs Samurai

• Samurai was the warrior class in feudal and preindustrial Japan, whereas Katana is the name of the most important weapon used by samurais.

• The fact that katana was used by samurais led these swords to be also known as samurai swords.

• The name samurai sword is confusing to many, and they fail to differentiate between katana and samurai.

• Katana became the soul of a samurai, and it was passed on to young generations as a family heirloom.
