Difference Between Fraud and Theft

Fraud vs Theft

Fraud and Theft are both characterized as wrong behaviors and a crime. The two words fraud and theft show differences between them in a big way. A fraud is an action that will be hidden at the time of committing. It is more likely that the action is hidden even after committing the act.

As a matter of fact a fraudster does not want the victim to know that he had been a victim of the fraud as long as possible. On the other hand a theft comes to light even at the time of the act. Sometimes it is known very shortly after the act is committed. This is the major difference between fraud and theft.

Another important difference between fraud and theft is in the nature of the two wrongs. While there is an intention to hide a fraudulent act there is no intention to hide a theft. The thief himself knows for sure that the theft cannot be hidden. On the other hand a fraudster would know that the fraud committed can be hidden with some effort.

Money robbed from a bank is a clear case of theft. On the other hand embezzlement in a bank is a clear case of fraud. There are several instances when frauds come to light several years after the committal.

You may be target of a fraud if you possess lot of money or assets. It is a wrong assumption that businessmen alone are targets of fraud. Most cases of commoners being deceived by fraud are seen these days.

Objects or valuables are stolen in the case of theft. On the other hand no object or valuable would be stolen when fraud is committed. In many cases fraud is committed with the complete approval of the person who is deceived. Hence no theft is committed during fraud. This is a very important difference between them.
