Difference between dark ages and medieval ages must be a new and interesting topic if you are not much acquainted with the knowledge about history. First of all, it should be mentioned that both of these are historical periods associated with Europe. Each region has their own historical period as the Chinese have periods such as Shang Dynasty and Ming Dynasty. So, dark ages and middle ages belong to the history of Europe. The Medieval Ages refer to the period from 5th to 15th century. Dark Ages refers to the period characterized by the deterioration in the economic and cultural situations in Europe. Historians roughly fix the period as the period of Early Middle Ages. It is between 400 AD and 1000 AD. This is the period between the fall of theRoman Empireand the High Middle ages.

Medieval Ages, or Middle Ages, is the period from 5th to 15th century (476 AD to 1600 AD) in the European history. The empire founded by Charles the Great did not survive his death. Its major territories, namely, East and West Francia became the modern countries of France and Germany. West Francia became the modern France. East Francia became the modern Germany.

Historians found that the people of the Medieval Ages were advanced in culture and produced masterpieces in art, literature, science, and medicine. It was indeed the Medieval Ages that paved the way for the beginning of Renaissance.

What is Dark Ages?

The Medieval Ages, or the Middle Ages, is divided into three main parts as Early Middle Ages, High Middle Ages, and Late Middle Ages. Dark Ages is the Early Middle Ages, which is fixed roughly to be from 400 AD to 1000 AD by historians.

The term, Dark Ages, was first coined by the Italian scholar Francesco Petrarca who was otherwise called Petrarch. It is interesting to note that there was religious struggle during the period of Dark Ages. The opposing perspectives ofProtestants and Catholicsprevailed during the period. The Protestants tried their best to recreateChristianity.

Catholics, on the contrary, considered this period of Dark Ages as productive era as far as the spreading of Christianity is concerned. In fact, it can be said that the Catholics did not consider this period as a dark period at all.

Historians consider the Dark Ages as a period characterized by innumerable Muslim conquests.

As a normal term, dark ages is associated with the meaning ‘a period of supposed unenlightenment’ according to the Oxford English dictionary. For example,

That time was known as the dark ages of the campus history.

Here, the term dark ages refers to a period without much inventions or findings as a campus.
