Difference Between Bullmastiff and Boxer

Bullmastiff vs Boxer

Bullmastiff and boxer are two of the most popular dog breeds. Their characteristics would be important to know as some people could misidentify these for each other, especially due to the slight resemblance in their conspicuous head shapes. Bullmastiff and boxer breeds mainly differ from each other in body shapes, sizes, weights, and temperaments.

Bullmastiff

Bullmastiff is a dog breed with a large body and short, but strong muzzle with drooping lips. They originated in Europe after crossbreeding the English mastiff and Old English bulldog breeds in the nineteenth century. The purpose of creating this dog breed was to guard the estates against poachers. They were accepted as purebred dogs since 1924 by the English kennel club. Their coat is dense, harsh, rough, and short in structure while its colour is a mixture of red, brown, fawn, or brindle. However, their short, but strong muzzle is mostly blackened. Their drooping lips give them a sad but cute and adorable appearance.

Male bullmastiffs are slightly larger than females with the minimum and maximum heights being 63 and 69 centimetres, respectively. Males weigh between 50 – 59 kilograms and females have about 45 – 54 kilograms of weight. The lifespan of a bullmastiff ranges around eight and eleven years. The considerable susceptibility of bullmastiffs for inherited diseases is a bit of a concern about them. However, their independent, loyal, quiet, and intelligent temperaments have been the main causes to attract people towards them.

Boxer

Boxers are short-haired dogs with smooth coats. They have a characteristic short snout, and their nostrils lie higher to the tip of the muzzle. Coat colours are fawn or brindle with or without white markings. Boxers are brachycephalic (they have broad, short skulls). Their lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw and bends slightly upwards. Usually, they are tail-docked and ear-cropped dogs.

A well-developed adult boxer weighs around 30 to 32 kilograms and the height at withers measures around 53 to 63 centimetres. Usually, males grow slightly taller and heavier than females. However, they are faithful and very loyal to the owner family, but distrustful of strangers. One tile litter size is about 6 – 8 pups and their lifespan averages around 10 years.
