Mbps and Kbps both are units of measuring speed of data transfer. It is hard to visualize any place on earth from where a person cannot access Internet. With the immense reach of internet and its use in all the critical areas it became important for the service providers to transfer the data over the Internet as fast as possible, more so for the services where it is the matter of life and death and delay of seconds can cause huge losses financially. The Internet speed is measured in terms of data that is transferred per second and is technically called bits per second.

When Internet was in nascent stages its speed was very slow thus bits per second could be used but as the speed increased bits were converted to kilobits, megabits and then to gigabits. Kbps and Mbps were the terms that got evolved giving the indication of rate of transfer of data over the internet. Kbps is the acronym of Kilo Bits per Second and Mbps is acronym of Mega Bits per Second. One Kilo Bit is equal to 1024 bits and one Mega Bit is equal to one million bits, it means that 1000 kilo bits are equal to one mega bit.

It is very clear from the above statement that the rate of transfer of data, when transferred in Kbps is 1000 times slower when compared to the rate when it is transferred at the speed of Mbps. Kbps speed is the normal internet speed for casual browsers and is sufficient for home connections but for more sophisticated services like medical, construction, manufacturing and stock exchanges Mbps speed is a must as the instructions and data cannot wait and have to be transferred immediately. Internet has now made the world so small that people no longer have to travel across continents they can chat with their near and dears at Kbps speed but if doctors have to perform surgery over internet then the speed has to be in Mbps.
