Web 1.0 vs Web 2.0 vs Web 3.0
Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 are used to refer the generations of Web. Like any other field, the internet has also seen a lot of developments and technological advancements since its inception. WWW or the internet, as we know it, was launched in 1991. With passage of time, new versions of web have come into existence known as web 2.0 and web 3.0. For an average user of internet, these words are very confusing as he does not know the real difference between web 1.0 and web 2.0 and web 3.0.
Web 1.0
Interestingly, what we today refer to as web 1.0 was called only internet that was in existence since 1991 to 1999. Experts also call it the read only era. The special features of this period were hyperlinking and bookmarking of pages in a website. As far as interaction with the users was concerned, there were only a guestbook and framesets around. Apart from these, there was no systematic and smooth flow of information and communication between the end user and the producer of the web pages. The use of HTML for sending of emails was another significant feature of this era. This was also the .com revolution period when static websites ruled the roost.
Web 2.0
It was at Media Live International in 1999 that O’ Reilly first conceptualized and presented the blueprint of web 2.0. It soon burst on the scene and the world was enriched with new and pathbreaking sites such as Wikipedia and also got to see new widgets and video streaming. Web 2.0 was utilized by users to publish their own content. The onset of social networking sites is also a phenomenon of web 2.0 which culminated with FaceBook, Twitter, Flickr and many more such sites.
Web 3.0
It is the third generation of web or web 3.0. Also referred to as semantic web, it has everything that people can ever wish for. Web 3.0 allowed the users liberty of conversion of content in their preferred language. It also brought to light micro formats and Artificial Intelligence. The introduction of 3D on web, deductive reasoning, personalized and tailor made search are some other features of web 3.0. it is much more advanced and allows the users to do a lot more than web 1.0 and web 2.0.
It is clear from the above analysis that technology is ever evolving and web 3.0 is just a milestone and not the end of the road. In due course of time, and with advancement of technology, it is almost certain that newer technologies will make their way on WWW. Already surfing has become not only easy but also fun.
